Throughout medical history, closure techniques and products have been used to support the fast and healthy healings of wounds. Innovations in medical technology have allowed for new wound closure products to specifically target the various stages of healing – from the primary closure bringing the two sides of a fresh wound together, to the ongoing process of holding the wound closed to promote biological healing.

... READ MOREPrimary Closure:The primary closure occurs on a fresh wound before the formation of granulation tissue. This can either be after an injury – after the area has been cleaned with an antiseptic – or after a surgical procedure which has left an incision. Addressing the wound in an early stage with primary closure products should lead to a cleaner and faster healing process in most cases. This closure technique is most applicable to clean wounds which have resulted in limited tissue loss.
Secondary Closure: Secondary wound closure, also known as closure by secondary intent, generally involves allowing the wound to heal or pass an infection on its own with limited intervention. Often the clinical provider will observe the healing process to ensure the wound is being healed or covered with healthy tissue. This technique is most applicable for dirty or contaminated wounds, or wounds that are too wide to close without significant tension on the tissue either side.
Delayed Primary Closure: Delayed primary closure, or healing by tertiary intention, is combination of the primary and secondary wound closure technique and is especially used for reducing the risk of infection in wounds. By allowing the infection to pass with the secondary intent, the wound can then be cleaned and closed by the primary intent after a delay, hence delayed primary closure.
